Eastern gray squirrel

Scientific name

Sciurus carolinensis

about the species

The Eastern gray squirrel is one of two common tree squirrel species found in Missouri, the other being the Eastern fox squirrel. These squirrels construct leafy nests in tree cavities or branch forks. Litters typically have 1-2 young, and they start emerging from the nest at about 6-7 weeks of age. The primary foods for this species are nuts, tree fruit and buds, and corn. Squirrels often store nuts in the ground which, if forgotten, can germinate and provide food and shelter for wildlife. Owls, coyotes, foxes, and pet dogs and cats are some of the predators that Eastern gray squirrels face.

conservation status

Least concern. Common in Missouri.
