The smallest heron species native to the Saint Louis area, green heron are cryptic summer residents that blend in well with their surroundings. Once called the green-backed heron, as they have a bluish green back and chestnut colored breast, this heron is the size of a crow and will stand motionless for extended periods of time while hunting. Green heron are also known to use tools- an indication of their intelligence.

How we’re Studying this species

You can find green heron hidden among reeds and lake vegetation every summer in Forest Park. Green heron are currently being observed alongside other waterbirds as a part of our waterbird community ecology project. In the future, we hope to tag and track individuals using GPS technology.
